In early 2008, I was introduced to Twitter by another marketing guru and after messing around with it for an hour or so, I just didn’t get it. I didn’t see the point in sharing my daily activities with people, especially if I didn’t have any followers and I didn’t really follow anyone else. I felt like I was talking to myself about Twitter marketing.
Then I wondered, why would anyone want to follow me in the first place? What do I really have to offer? So I quit using Twitter and moved on to other things.
Six months later I’m listening to some marketing friends talk about the greatness of Twitter, and I started to feel like a tool. I’ll admit, I felt a little embarrassed that someone as smart as me couldn’t figure it out, yet everyone else I knew thought it was the greatest thing since…well, probably MySpace.
I decided to give it another try and I asked my friends for help trying to figure it out. They started showing me some tools and resources that I’d never heard of and that’s when it all came together for me! I realized that the reason I didn’t understand Twitter was not because I was an idiot, but because I just wasn’t using the right tools!
I started doing everything I could to learn about how the different marketing gurus used Twitter and I found a couple of different philosophies. One of them was to rabidly follow as many people as you could to try and get a bunch of follow backs.
Another guru strategy was to only follow a few people and still expect everyone else to listen to you. The third strategy was to follow back everyone that followed you and try to converse with 20k people at once.
To be honest, I didn’t really like any of those strategies. I saw flaws in each and every one of them, yet there were a few good ideas that I thought I could combine into a killer strategy. So I did…you know what I found?
I found that if you follow the right people, you will attract more of the same without having to do a single thing. As your influence grows, and as you develop relationships with people, you attain your own expert status within that niche. When you have a group of loyal and devoted followers, not only will they stick around regardless of what you promote, but they’ll help you do it!
Twitter gives you the potential to go viral and use word of mouth to your advantage, at a worldwide scale! I’ve done all the research to find the best strategies and I’ve implemented them myself at least half a dozen times.
The power of Twitter is not having a bunch of followers, but in having a targeted group of followers that you can influence easily and often! Get a FREE copy of my Twitter eBook at: http://www.SweetTweets.info
